Senior Moment - Jordan Swarthout

I know, I know – you’re getting tired of hearing about Jordan Swarthout. Everytime you pick up the paper there is his smiling face. But here are some things you don’t know. He likes to knit. He uses toenail polish. A tattoo in the shape of a heart located on his chest proclaims his love for his Mom. His favorite drink is raw chard blended with sardines. He likes to skip school to watch the “Wiggles”. Most of you know this, but he has the hots for Connie Rice.
But I digress. Is this really any way to treat the school record holder in the 3200 and the greatest athlete Marshall Middle School has produced - Yet? Second Fastest in the 1600? Ninth fastest in the 800? A multiple Most Inspirational winner and four time Captain? Athlete of the week numerous times and the owner of the fastest XC time in school history? Winner of the White Moustache Scholarship and etc? (It’s hard to keep up the offers just keep flowing)
Heck Yes!
Jordan will be headed for the UW next fall and plans to run XC and Track. He truly is a scholar athlete and a gentleman. I’ll miss his willingness to help and to be a leader and I know we will all be following his progress at the UW and beyond.

PS Stay tuned Jordan has one more shot at the 1600 record at the Golden West Meet in CA, June 16.

Senior Moment - Kevin Meserve

I’ll get back to you on this.

Senior Moment - Stephanie Schmitt

Stephanie hails from McCleary. I’m not sure what middle school she attended. Many people on our team don’t know this, but Stephanie was the McCleary Bear Festival Queen. For an entire year she spend most of her summer Saturdays riding on a float with a giant paper mache (sp?) bear and handed out bowls of bear stew to the spectators. Stephanie comes from a long line of bear related siblings. There of course was Teddy. Then came Jeff whose major claim to fame was bear crawling up the hills at Sunfair. It has been nearly a decade of Schmitts, and I don’t know if I can bear to see the last of them go.
Stephanie is a member of the sub – six club. She has been on at least two state bound teams. She as been a captain and a leader and a three sport athlete. She was this year’s winner of the Capital City Marathon Scholarship.
Stephanie will be attending UBC this fall and I know she will always stay active. Her smiling face and talent will be missed.

Senior Moment - Kevin Meserve

I’ll get back to you on this.

Senior Moment - Kyle Stohr

Kyle Stohr is another great runner from – you guessed it – Griffin. I was really impressed one season when Kyle was injured and he continued to bike and swim faithfully checking in every other day. He always volunteered to do the 3200 in duel meets and we always needed him, because our 800 was filled to the gills. He wasn’t afraid to take on the hard tasks if it helped the team.
Kyle was part of our Cross Country Team which qualified for the state meet. He also traveled with us to Stanford and helped our team place high in the rankings.
Because we share an interest in Horticulture you might have overheard us talking about Plumeria, Kumquats, or winter hardy bananas. Some of you more paranoid people out there probably thought we were plotting to take over the world and were speaking a secret code language.
Kyle is headed to the UW where I’m sure he will continue to exercise. I’ll miss his readiness to race the 3200 and our discussions about plants. Hmmm, now who will I find to replace an athlete like Kyle – it won’t be easy.

Senior Moment - Ariel Taylor

Ariel came out of Griffin Middle School with impressive credentials. Each year in high school she slowly but surely improved those credentials becoming number four in the 3200, number eight in the 1600, and number eleven in the 800, on the all time list. She also saw action in the 4x4 during this time.
In Cross Country Ariel was one of the top runners in the history of Capital. She always came through and ran tough – that’s a good description of Ariel – tough!
In both sports, Cross Country and Track Ariel was a Captain and a natural leader. She led at meets and in practices and was voted Most Inspirational four times and MVP once.
Ariel is headed to Eastern Washington on a Track and Cross Country scholarship this fall. We will miss her leadership and I’ll miss coaching her. Goodbye and don't be a stranger!

Senior moment - Chris McIsaac

One of the fastest runners coming out of middle school, his eighth grade year, Chris McIsaac quickly showed that he would make an impact on the high school scene. He is on the top 20 list in both the 1600 and 3200. As a Sophomore, without prompting, he began to time the intervals in our workouts and did so the rest of his career. During his Junior year when others were injured he picked up the slack and was willing to do the 16, 32, 8 and sometimes 4x4.
Chris was elected captain of both the track and cross country teams. He was a good leader and was interested in organizing social events – even some I did not know about(-:
Chris is headed off to Linfield College where he plans to run and hopefully get a degree as well (-: We will all miss his whacky sense of humor and his leadership. Pink shorts forever!

A Tale of Three Cities (Pasco, Kennewick, Richland)

It was the best of times it was the worst of times, but mostly it was a good time. We began our journey on Thursday morning at Enterprize Car Rentals. I did get the SUV I wanted, a big bright red Durango, but it had no temperature gage on the mirror to my disappointment. I wondered how I was going to entertain myself on the five hour trip over and back, a total of ten hours of driving. I would soon find out.
At the school Graydon and Jordan helped me load up the tent and etc. By 8:30 we were on I -5 headed for Pasco. Our first stop was Snoqualamie Pass and was uneventful. It was amazing how much the snow had melted since we had travel through here five weeks ago to the Pasco Invite. There was actually a store next to the rest rooms that we did not see in April because of the piles of snow. The girls team and Coach Wright were at the pass as well and we exchanged pleasantries and remind one another that we were meeting at the DQ in Yakima.
We plowed through the rest of the mountain pass headed for our turn off at Ellensburg. It was here my boredom forced me into action. Jordan was reading a children's book written in French, I switched the radio to a Spanish speaking station, and began to ask him questions in English. This didn't seem to bother Jordan much or Graydon either. I finally switched the radio to static and after about five minutes Graydon asked what was going on, but Jordan just kept reading his book. We snaked our way through the passes between Ellensburg and Yakima looking for state patrol cars as we traveled. During my tenure as a coach at CHS no less than three parents have received speeding tickets on this up and down section of road. The uphill is okay, but the long downhills make it really difficult to keep from speeding. I'm always careful in this section, but today I was extra cautious because I was driving a big red SUV which might as well as had a sign on it inscribed with, "Give me a ticket".
Soon it was noon. We parked at the DQ in Yakima and everyone scattered to different fast food places. Coach Wright and I ate at DQ. The guys headed for a sub shop and apparently had to climb a cyclone fence to reach their destination. Jordan was the first over and received a minor cut on his hand. Not to be out done, Graydon picked up a pine cone and chucked it at the fence, it rebounded, and cut his hand. These are two of the dumbest smart people I know. All the wounds were minor, and I was able to sew them up with a small sewing kit.
We arrived at at the Red Lion, which was to be our base for the next couple of days, to the ring of a cell phone. The girl's van had gotten a flat tire and would be late. We changed and went over to the track to make sure we could be in the tent lottery. Apparently they decided to have the lottery early and we received the last ticket. It was a beauty though, giving us a full view of the track from up on the hill. We surveyed the track, and decided that yes indeed, it was a track - a big red track. Friday was a busy day with Amanda, the 4x4, Jordan and Graydon racing. But before we raced we had to sprint down the hill chasing our tent which, caught by a gust of wind, ripped loose from its pinnings and flip flopped down the hill. Jordan had our best placing of the meet that day with a 9th in the 3200. Amanda ran her second fastest 3200 and had the priviledge of being in a state record setting 32oo with Megan O'Reilly. The 4x4 PR'd by nearly two seconds as I did a "play by play" on the cell phone to Mrs. Miller. Their time of 4:06 was one of Capital's best times in recent history and all the runners return. Relay members were Bailey, Lisa, Hannah S. Johannah, and Amy. On Saturday Graydon had a strong showing in the 1600 being our top finisher in that event.
Jordan and Graydon rode home with their parents. I'm not sure why. I shower on a monthly basis. I knew this was going to happen, so I bought an audiobook from Barnes & Noble - Founding Brothers, by Joseph Ellis. Switching between this book and Beatle albums it was a smooth sail home.

Next trip to Pasco - 3A State Cross Country Meet - but we need to do some work first.

Barbeque/Awards June 1st Yaugher

Spread the word to your parents and other runners that the Awards Barbeque will be June 1st at Yaugher between 4-8:00. Dinner will be between 5:30 - 6:30 and the awards will be handed out around 6:30. At this point the weather calls for 73 degrees and partly sunny so bring rain gear.

We will provide meat, buns, cups, plates, eating utensils and condiments. You bring drinks - liter bottles are best, desserts, chips and salads.

We will be having a first run of the summer for the xc team at 4:30. (30 minutes)

Spaceman Spiff - don't forget the horse shoes - and leave the horse at home this time.

Monday, May 22, 2006

Pasco weather etc.

Friday calls for 69 degrees and partly cloudy. Saturday will be 70 degrees with a few showers. We will be leaving at 8:00 on Thursday morning and should arrive in Pasco mid- afternoon. We will check in, visit the track, and then go out to eat. Perhaps there will be time for a movie later.
Jordan, Amanda and Graydon had a nice run today. The relay team did Yaugher and some strides. Everyone seems calm and it is business as usual - as it should be.

We will be staying at the Red Lion Inn (or as I like to call it, the Dead Lion Inn) in Pasco - 1 - 509-547-0701 Thursday and Friday nights. We will be getting two vehicles from Enterprize and were told they might be vans or SUV's. I like the SUV's because I don't pay for the gas and they come equiped with a thermometer. It's fun to watch the temperature drop when we gain altitude and then go up as we lose altitude. When you are driving for five hours that's about as exciting as it gets. The school district has given us some money for food and we are grateful, but it's really not enough, so bring extra bucks.

Stay tuned.

Second Day of League

Jordan ran 4:18.49 PR, and a 59 second last lap for first place in the 1600. Graydon bravely took the lead on the 3rd lap and forced the pace to quicken and finished with a PR 4:22.58, good for 2nd on the all time Junior list, and 4th on the over all list, and good enough for a spot on the District team.
Amanda PR'd in the 1600 with a 5:24.23. Bailey was caught in a time warp, but finished 3rd in the 800.
We are still waiting to see if Mt. Tahoma drops their runner and allows Chris to race at Districts. It is a possibility according to their coach.

Excellent outing for the CHS distance crew. On to Districts!

REAL STRESS ???

This is from a note I wrote to the guy’s XC team last fall before districts with a few changes. I like the History Channel and am particularly fascinated by World War II stories. Perhaps it’s because my Dad was in World War II and I always expected him to turn up on a news reel. One night I was watching something about D Day. The retaking of France and the defeat of Germany had begun. The bay at Normandy was full of ships and many of them were unloading items such as tanks, supplies, and men by using amphibious vehicles. The camera panned into one of these vehicles loaded with men and I was amazed to see something familiar. Their job was to storm the beach at Normandy. To do so, they would be left wide open to enemy fire. They knew they were headed for possible death or maiming and one could see the fear in their eyes. Every single one of them had that look. I had seen that look before, but couldn’t quite place it. Several days later, at a track meet, I gazed into to the eyes of one of my runners preparing to race and there was that look. This was puzzling to me because I knew no one was going to die, but yet there was that look.
There is real stress in this world. The stress of racing is way down on the list. However, it is a chance to practice facing stress and to defeat it. Every time you race and look stress in the eye and defeat it you grow stronger as a person. If you begin to feel stressed before a race, smile and say to yourself, “I am in charge and I refuse to be intimidated.” You cannot control what the other athletes in the race are going to do, but you have control over you.
So, defeat stress and race hard! It will be a double victory for you.

Stephanie wins "Spirit of Running Scholarship"

The Capital City Marathon Association selected its annual $1500.00 scholarship winner last night and our own Stephanie Schmitt was the recipient. The board was quite taken by her essay - so I have heard. Jordan Swarthout picked up a $1000.00 stipend in recognition of his work with the marathon and its training group. Get involved - it might pay off! This year's marathon is May 20 and 21st. On May 20th we will be needing a crew of three or four with a truck to help set up a couple of tents at about 10 in the morning. On May 21st we will be needing people at the finish line around 9:00 to help with food etc. Take down is a good job because there is lots of food. I'll get out more info. as we get closer.

Last Chance Meet tomorrow - Good Luck and race well!
