Tell us about it

Paul Buckley is in Germany, Ale is in Puerto Rico, and Laura is in Mexico. We travel all over the world. How about a report from folks when they go on a cool run while on vacation. Run on the Oregon Coast? Along The Rhine? ThroughThe Vatican? or ???? Just write it up and send it to me at jlmiller@osd.wednet.edu and I'll publish it. Any topics about running you want covered - just ask.

Graydon is lonely

Who would have ever guessed the most popular guy at CHS is lonely. I know it is hard to believe, but he has been showing up at 5:00 to run everyday and no one is there. Morning workouts (9:00) have been well attended and there is much jocularity. We have 40 guys on the team and I hope all of them are running even if they aren't showing up to our practices.

17 weeks until the state meet!

Kennedy Creek Group Run July 8

There will be a group run on Sat. July 8th, on logging roads at Kennedy Creek. We will be meeting at the market on Steamboat Rd. (Chevron Station) at 9:00 a.m. and will travel to the running site. You can choose to run for 30 mintues or 45 or 60, because it's out and back. This run is open to all guys, girls and parents may join in as well. If you don't want to run bring a bike or walk.

Let's get goin'! 17 weeks until the state meet

It's Official!

Stanford is on Sept. 30 and the Nike/JimDanner meet is on Oct. 7th. Everyone goes to Danner, but we are taking our top 12 boys to Stanford. If you aren't training and want to go to Stanford you better get going. Girls will go next year.

We will not be going to Sunfair this year. After taking a poll we found very little interest in the event itself. We did find a lot of interest in the overnight at White Pass. We felt the money would be better spent in renting a bus for Danner. We already provide three overnights for everyone which is way more than most teams - 24 hour run, and Kamp Kah nee ta.

Another Schedule Change

We are adding the Nike/Jim Danner Invite to our schedule to replace the SK Invite on Oct. 7. This meet takes place at Blue Lake near Portland and has it all. There is a super 7 JV division, a JV division, Frosh race, and a race featuring some of the top teams from WA and Oregon and CA. We plan to take a bus using some of the money raised by the Lakefair Run.

It also, appears that Stanford will be on Sept. 30 and not the 23rd. I heard this from the Jim Danner Invite Race Director and am awaiting confirmation from the folks at Stanford. Historically they have not responded too quickly.

See 6-14-06 entry for new schedule

Allergies and Running

I was asked about allergies and running today. I am going to assume because the question is being asked now that the allergies in question are to grass pollen. Check with your doctor about allergy medications. Also, try to run early in the morning when the pollen count is lower. Avoid running through fields during the time grass is in bloom - which has been the last couple of weeks. The good news is that the hot weather we are experiencing right now should speed up the blooming process. Since grass is wind pollinated windy days can be the worst. You will like this - do not, I repeat do not, mow the lawn. Exercising indoors such as a treadmill etc. or swimming can help. Shower after running - it will wash off pollen and make you a lot nicer to be around.

If you are wheezing or coughing see a doctor right away.

Run!

Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle: When the sun comes up you'd better be running.

Correction on summer running

Summer runs will be at 9:00 in the morning - not 9:30.

Ted ran the 400 in the all comers meet at CHS and creamed the field. His brother, Gunnar, placed second in the mile.

Summer Running Has Begun

XC Athletes are meeting after school to run. Once school is out people will be running at either 9:30 or 5:00. Try to add five miles a week or what ever you are comfortable running. The more people the merrier.

For more info. talk with Chris, Graydon, Joe or Ted or call me at 709-0572 or jlmiller@osd.wednet.edu

Jordan - Golden West (CA)

Jordan placed 4th in the "A" mile at the Golden West with a time of 4:21, which probably equates out to about a 4:19. It was a tactical race with a slow pace and Jordan used his kick to pick off people in the last 200 meters. He was happy with his placing against some of stellar athletes from around the country.

Twenty - one weeks until the State XC Meet

For every ending there is a new beginning. We salute our Seniors and will remember them fondly with a big smile. As Bob Dylan said, " Don't cry because it's over - Smile because it happened." (If you don't know who Bob Dylan is - Google it)

It's time to look ahead and get going because time is a wastin'. By looking at the results of last year's state meet we should be a top four team, if we are willing to do the work this summer. I had a very prominant coach tell me at the State Track Meet that the 3A teams are afraid of us. Let's give them reason to be. More to follow.

Senior Moment - Kevin Meserve

I am not sure what middle school Kevin Meserve ran for when he was an eighth grader if any. I first really noticed him in a race, because he was the guy running with a smile on his face. We soon discovered he was running with a smile because he wasn’t running too fast. My suggestion to him was he needed to perhaps hurt a bit more. It wasn’t long before he was smiling less, but running faster. So basically, I took a happy person made him more miserable which in turn made him happier? Did I mention Kevin handed in his sweats?
Kevin traveled with us to Stanford last fall where he helped the JV team to a second place finish and was instrumental in pushing our team to a state berth. He loved the SK course and always did well there.  He was nearly a member of the 5 minute Club missing it by only two seconds. Had he not come down with bronchitis this year I’m sure he would  have easily dipped under five. Did I mention Kevin handed in his sweats?
Kevin is attending Ripon College next fall where he plans to major in journalism and run. I googled the college and it looks like a nice fit. It’s good to know his running career is not over.
One of Kevin’s dreams is to be the Editor of Time Magazine. Speaking of dreams, I had a dream about Kevin recently. Kevin had entered the New York City Marathon to write an article about the race from a competitor’s perspective. He was up at the front, before the start, interviewing runners when the gun sounded. He was caught up in the mass of humanity which is the NYC Marathon and found himself swept off with the lead runners. He knew he was doomed and could not possibly keep up the pace, but then just ahead he spied the pace vehicle and inspiration. It was a Hostess Twinkie truck. Hostess was a major sponsor of the race. Kevin shot to the lead and chased that vehicle madly for the rest of the race and finished with a new world record. At the finish, he screamed for them to open up the truck so he could gobble his fill. They obliged, after all he was the new world record holder, but to his dismay the truck was empty. Frustrated and angry he then devoured the entire truck. When interviewed by the press he said, “A lot of people don’t know this, but I handed in my sweats.”
Seriously though, it has been fun coaching Kevin and I’m expecting big things from him in the future in and out of college. He will be missed by us all.
This ends my tribute to the Senior distance runners. These are amazing people and we haven’t heard the last from them. Most importantly I know with their enthusiasm and hard work this world is going to be a better place and social security might possibly outlive me.
