Driver Needed

We have three vans on Friday which is just enough to handle the 18 passengers traveling to state. One more driver and car or van would greatly reduce the crowding in the vans. If you are available and willing to drive, e mail me at jlmiller@osd.wednet.edu

Thanks

Capital Girls Close 2nd - Boys 5th

Both the Girls and Boys teams qualified for the State Meet in Pasco next weekend Nov. 4. Amanda Wright placed second with her first sub 19 effort at a 5k. She was backed up strongly by Bailey, Emily, Katie, Brianna, Johannah, and Maria.
The Boys team placed a hard fought fifth place. By the way, I plugged last years times into this meet and this years team would have beaten last years team on this course - thanks to a 17:11 by Bryce, a 17:12 by Adam and a 17:14 by Max. Ale added to this depth with a 16:53 and his first time under 17:00. The 2006 teams fifth runner was Max at 17:14. The 2005 fifth runner was timed at 17:25. It turns out that both runners happened to be Max. Noah and Ted rounded out the 2006 scoring.

Photos soon and State info. as well.

Redirections to District Meet

After driving to the course tonight we located a faster and better way to get to the District Meet, plus I'm not sure the other directions I was given will actually get you there.

Take the Dupont Exit - go past Ft. Lewis and turn right at the sign that says North Gate - Take this road to Edgewood and turn right - then turn right onto Veterans Way - the course is a couple of blocks away

Good luck!

After winning the meet tonight the boys and girls teams have one meet to win to claim the League title. A victory next Thursday at Steilacoom will capture the title.

JV Boys - Good job on the "No hope for their future task"

A boy left a medium jersey at the meet - I have it.

Practice tomorrow after school. Less than a week to go for some of you. The District allows us to take nine athletes. You may workout with us if you are not in that top nine however after league.

Ted forgotten then remembered

Joe and Noah were given credit for saving the shark in San Francisco Bay. Recent information - not from Ted - has it that Ted actually removed a hook from the sharks mouth. Ted is a hero then also. Someday Ted, Noah and Joe will be surfing and this shark will not take a chunk out of them in graditude.

Week Ahead

Thursday - at Ft. Steilacoom - This is a must win meet to be eligable to win the league title. To win the league title a team must win both the dual meets and the league meet. Fun starts at 4:00 with JV Boys.

Saturday - Frosh/Soph Invite at Curtis HS

2.2 miles

1:30 Girls Race

2:00 Boys Race

2:45 Awards

I'll search for some directions. For Steilacoom look back at the Ft. Steilacoom Invite info.

Nike/Jim Danner Information

Nike/Jim Danner information is below. I have made a few changes since the first entry. The directions have changed a bit to reflect the direction we are traveling and the bus will be stopping for dinner afterwards, so bring some money. This looks like another flat/fast PR course. Be ready to be amazed!

The Science of Finishing

It is time to get down to details.  Here is what you need to know about the science of finishing a race:
  1. Before the race check out the finish area and know where the finish line is located. It might not be located right at the finish sign or banner. It could be before or after the finish sign or banner.

  2. Run five or ten meters beyond the finish line and then move quickly through the chute. If it is a close finish, a judgment might be made according to whose torso crossed the line first. Be sure to maintain your position in the chute.

  3. Once you commit to your finishing kick, all energy should be focused ahead. Looking back slows you up and aids the people behind you psychologically.

  4. Pump your arms and drive your knees – have the attitude that no one will pass you in the final 300 meters. Stay loose. Keep your jaw slack. Basically go as fast as you can and be as loose as possible.

  5. Do not time yourself. Stopping your watch crossing the finish line slows you down. We will have a time for you later, or if you need a more immediate time have a friend time you.

  6. When to kick is an individual decision, but generally 300 meters out or further is the rule. Most likely you will not be able to see the finish so check the course
before the race and pick out a landmark from which to kick.

Steve Prefontaine liked to do what he called the long kick. He was once quoted saying his goal in the Olympic 5000 meters was to run the last mile under four minutes. By doing this he hoped to burn out the true kickers – the ones sitting on his shoulder waiting for 100 or 200 meters and then pouncing.
