Excellent Workout Today!

It was good to see all of the new faces as well as the old ones today. The winter conditioning group had an awesome workout at which they have slowly built up to over several months. If you are new to running don't get discouraged - some of the people you saw being awesome today were back where you are last year at this time. Some of you I purposely held back to evaluate where you are physically, since I hadn't seen you at all this winter. It is better to hold you back and prevent an injury then allow you to jump in and do to much and then have to nurse an injury for several weeks.
If you are new to running please take the time to read this entire blog to gather information on running and to get a sense of our history.
Tomorrow we will be going on a longer slower run. Please use all walk lights. I will attempt to send you on a run which will take you off the pavement. Here are some thoughts about running off campus. Always run with a partner or better yet more people. There is safety in numbers. Remember that you are invisible to drivers. Don't expect them to automatically stop for you. The law says they should, so you would be in the right if they ran over you, but you would be dead right. Respect private and public property. I will quiz you over this at practice tomorrow.

Article on Injuries

A couple of weeks ago there was an article in the paper about a girl who was running 55 miles a week and became injured. It's common knowledge that after you go over thirty miles a week you open yourself up to injury. Eventually though to continue to be successful ones mileage and intensity must increase. If done slowly allowing the body to adapt it is doable. Also, some athletes are just more phyically capable of handling the mileage. I bring this up because later in the article it mentions that the girl is also a cheerleader, which begs the question- did she hurt herself cheerleading or running? Often times when runners face an injury it is really easy to blame running when the initial injury might be from something else and running aggravated it. It could be that a combination of the two activities caused the injury. If the girl is going to continue running she has several options: 1. Quit cheerleading 2. Reduce mileage and continue cheerleading.
I would encourage you to do as many activities as you would like in the off season, but once the season is underway remember that you are working hard and need to be careful with outside activities - that is if you are a serious runner and racer. If not, knock yourself out.

See you Feb. 25. Get cleared! This promises to be a great season.

Track in 17 Days

Track begins Feb. 25 - get cleared! If you are a guy check out the track bulletin board in the boys lockerroom. If you are a girl - it's best not to. I plan to put up more photos from the XO meet. We should have a schedule soon. There are two changes we are working on and would prefer not to publish a schedule until we get it right.

Thank You For Your Help!

Noah, Nathan, Amanda, Kailyn, Ted and Gunnar thank you for helping at the waterstops on Sarturday. We are up again on March 1st when we share the stops with Olympia. I wouldn't be surprised if we are needed every Saturday in March. Remember, it's $125- everytime we help and it's actually fun.

Amanda Alert: Part of Amanda's head has been featured in yet another magazine from a story based on The Border Clash. We have copies in the fitness portable. Amanda will be there Tuesdays and Thursdays to sign autographs.
