Notes on Stanford Invite

We placed third in our division - very close to first.

Jogging across the Golden Gate Bridge is always and interesting and exciting experience, but this time we nearly ran into a protest of nearly a thousand people.

We always manage to get a little lost, which allows us to see more of the city.

The meet seems to be less of a zoo thanks to getting rid of some divisions. There are still three thousand people. That's a bunch on a golf course.

Adam, Bryce and Zach have gone three times. This probably will be the last time that happens.

The girls will be going next year and the boys in 2010.

There was an Ukrainian group staying at our hotel and when we all came down for breakfast their expressions indicated they seemed confused about our tee shirts.

This group was excellent to travel with and everyone behaved and got along. A special thanks to Mr. Echols and Mr. Saul for chaperoning.

Bearcat Invite

Frosh and Sophs this meet has an event just for you. I have signed you up and expect you to go for the win. This is the flatest and fastest course on the planet. Be prepared for mind-blowing times and a big win!

We are at North Thurston on Weds. It will most likely be a flat 2+ something course. Spikes will be okay.

Enumclaw

After a discussion today at practice we decided to just race a JV race for the guys tomorrow. Thr JV race is schedule for 4:15, but could happen a bit sooner. This should allow us to get home sooner than originally planned.

I will be there for Thursdays workout.

The traveling Stanford boys will be running a workout with Coach Helms. Fridays workout for the boys not traveling to Stanford will be an easy 30 min. run on your own right after the last class. This would be a good time for ultimate frisbee.

Saturday is optional.

Big Day at Steilacoom Invite - photos by Nancy

If there would have been a combined score trophy for second place Capital would have walked away with it, with its 4th place finish by the girls and boys varsity teams. Not to be out done the Boys JV "Super JV" finished 4th as well. To round out the day, the JV girls placed 5th, and the the JV's 2 placed 6th.
Emily had a splendid day racing to the fastest time for a Capital girl (19:08) on the Steilacoom Course yet.
Josh and Dalton both were under 17:00.

Karl, Aaron, Dan and Kyle stopped in the middle of their race to help an athlete having a seizure, so when you look at their times factor that in. They should be commended for taking charge, when no one else seemed interested, and getting a call out on a cell phone.

Thanks Nancy! Anyone else out there willing to take photos and send them to me is welcome. and encouraged.

Cap Invite Sat. - Help!

Over 1200 runners will be visiting Heritage Park for the Capital Invite this Saturday Sept. 13. We will be needing parental help at the finish and on the course. Please report to the motor home, with the large Capital Invite sign, in the parking lot at 8:30.

Athletes: If you do not have in ten workouts or are academically ineligible you must enter the open race at 9:45, register, and not wear Capital gear. Numbers of the RRCA race may be picked up at the motor home in the parking lot. I will be going over this again in practice. Arrive at 8:30 to have time to warm up and get registered.

Get everything you will need from your lockers on Friday after school because the locker room will not be open on Saturday.

The coaches will be helping athletes as much as possible, but our attention will be diverted to the meet administration. Please don't feel neglected.

Nervous? First race? Show up! This meet is a great way to break into racing. It's short and age friendly. Do your best and then get working at getting better - that's all we ask.

BBQ Great Success

I don't have to tell anyone who attended our BBQ Relay what a great time was had by all. After the hard fought relay with some excellent mile splits by nearly everyone we dove into an incredible variety and amount of food. Mike Swarthout brought two BBQ's so we had hotdogs and chicken. Afterwards there were games of volleyball, badminton and ultimate frisbee.
Bryce showed up after winning the 19 and under division of the Black Hills Tri. He still had enough energy to eat and play games. Congrats'

A black spike bag and two pieces of silverware were left behind. Let me know if it's yours.

Sweat Issues and other stuff

I had a parent thinking she could not afford to have her child in XC because after paying $160.00 she could not afford more for sweats. Buying the sweats is optional. We do have sweats that are loaners for the season - for free.

No one has stepped forward to offer a BBQ, so unless you have heard otherwise don't bring meat - or bring meat and keep it in a cooler.

We will have a team tee shirt which will be optional. If your athlete worked at the Lakefair Run their's will be free. We will let you know soon about the cost.

A big thank you for all the parents who showed up for parent night. The questions were good and I want you to know that you can e mail me at anytime with questions or concerns. I used to say there are no stupid questions - but then I taught middle school for 31 years. Trust me, if you think the question you have is stupid I have a list of about 1000 that can top it. I miss them though.

We have a new person that will be helping and running with us from time to time. His name is Chris Helm and he ran a 9:14 two mile in high school which is good, but even better he can't run that fast anymore and he'll be in the middle of the pack on the long runs. Isn't wonderful how old age makes us better - I get more wonderful all the time.

Big day tomorrow at Yaugher. We meet at 3:00 at the horseshoe pits. It's a potluck!

Fundraising Opportunity

The Black Hills Tri needs helpers on Sat. morning Sept 6. Each helper will mean that $20.00 is donated to the team. Twenty dollars x 20 people is $400.00. If you are interested let me know at practice on Thursday.

Picnic on Sat. Sept 6, 2008 3:00

It is important that if you cannot make this picnic that you let the coaches know. We will be setting up teams Thursday and Friday.

We need some BB-ques - gas would be best.

Bring your own meat drinks etc.

We will be meeting at the shed near the horseshoe pits.

We are now 73 strong.

Parents Mtg. Sept 4 ETC.

There will be a parents meeting Sept 4, in the Commons, at 6:30 PM. We will have some handouts and go over any questions.

This weekend Sept. 6, we plan to have a picnic run at Yaugher. We plan to do a relay at 3:00 and then eat and play games later. The relay will be two persons to a team and due to our numbers (68 at press time) will force us to keep things simple, so it will be 3x one lap around Yaugher. Basically that means one person is resting while the other is racing. Parents are welcome to form two person teams and join us.

Capital Invite Sept. 13: We need your help. The first race is at 8:00. There are all sorts of jobs available most being low tech. For more info. on the Capital Invite go to: ontherunevents.com/capinvite

See you Thursday!
