CSI Dead Possum

Before I announce the winner of the name the possum contest I must share something with you. I have been wondering how this poor creature died - if s/he is indeed dead. I thought it might have died because someone clubbed it and it then crawled under the fence and then passed on. However, there were no signs of blood or a struggle. I searched the area for clues in the immediate area without luck. I searched back in the brush, and then I found them- numerous cigarette butts. The possum, obviously, must have died from smoking.

Names offered for our dearly deceased critter:

Polly

Peter

Patrick

Paul

Pietro

Patricia

Patty

Jaws

And some I can't reprint

And the winner is: Jaws as suggested by Vivek. His gift is: the possum. I recommend you pick it up before it thaws.

Winter Conditioning Monday at 3:00 and Thursday at 12:00.

CCMA Training Group Waterstops Day One

Five people showed up to help with waterstops this morning. Nathan, Gunnar and Kalyn gave out water at San Francisco and Puget Streets and Dalton and I manned the station at Legion and Plum. It was a cold morning, but not as cold as last weekend when the Chehalis girls team helped.
We have next weekend (Feb. 2) and then share March 1st with Oly. Every other week as the distances get longer, so more help will be needed. I will be gone next week, so I will specifically need some drivers who can transport other people. Again, we get $125.00 each time we help and we are signed up to do four and we will most likely do more.

CCMA Training Group Water Stops

Chehalis helped with the waterstops this morning as did I. It was kind of cold, but everyone had a great time. We are up for the next three Saturdays and I will be needing your help. We get $125.00 for two hours or less of fun. This is not hard work and you can get volunteer credits as well. Drop me a line at jlmiller@osd.wednet.edu to sign up. On March 1 , which is final official work date we will be sharing the stops with Winlock Miller High School. This will give us $600.00, but wait! There's more! There are four more possibilities! Giving us a total for the stops of $1200.00! Now add the day of race for the CC Marathon and that's a grand total of $1800.00!!! But that's not all! Become a regular helper (weekly) and you will be eligible for a free pair of shoes from South Sound Running!

Auction February 9, 2008

The auction is rapidly approaching. Mike Swarthout 866-7986 has volunteered to reserve some tables for track or xc parents, so give him a call if you want to sit with the really cool people. Janett still needs items for the auction. If everyone gave one item we would have 80 items. I'm willing to settle for 20, but am moew than willing to take more.

Dead? Possum Day 3

The possum did not look any worse for wear today. I checked its training log and he had more miles than some of you. I have decided we need to name him or her, but will need your help. Please e mail me at jlmiller@osd.wednet.edu to offer a suggestion. The person selecting the winning name will receive an award.

Possum Report Day 2

Walked past the possum again today. I think he moved a bit since yesterday. He was looking up and today he was looking down. It could be gravity at work. I am resisting the urge to give him a name. In fact, I don't even know if it's a him and I'm not going there to find out.

I had a request for Janet Tallman's e mail. Janet is in charge of the auction for us.

Winter Training and Stuff

Sixteen people showed up for winter training today. Today some of the athletes did hills and some exercised indoors and did weights. All sports are welcome to join in on this activity every Monday and Thursday.

CHS XC is up for aid stations for the Capital City Marathon Training Group Jan. 26 and February 2, 2008. Capital and Oly will be working together on March 1. If some teams do not respond we can take their spots and get $125.00 each time.

While walking today I stumbled across a dead possum on the hill near the green house. At least I think it was dead. After all they don't call it "playing possum" for nothing. I thought perhaps it would get up and wander away during my first lap, but it was still there stareing glassy eyed when I returned. Achilles gave it a long sniff and then went back to chasing tennis balls. It was still there on my third lap and it was noticed by Dalton during winter conditioning. If it is not there tomorrow it's possible it was acting, and if so, it should get an Academy Award.

Booster Club Auction

The Booster Club Auction will be held at SPSCC, Saturday February 9, from 5:30 to 9:30. Janet Tallman is heading up the XC donations and could use some help. We have traditionally done very well at the auction. If we get organized we can do even better.

Items that have auctioned off well in the past:

Use of a cabin for several days or a week
Trips - boats planes etc.
Horticultural items
Wills
Speciality dinners
Dinners at a local restaurant
Dinner with the Governor's dog etc.
I'll think of some more if you will help me - more ideas - e mail me @ jlmiller@osd.wednet.edu

Janet Tallman (867-9492) or janettallman@comcast.net is heading up the committee and she would like your ideas and help as well. It would be much better to have 10 or 20 people come up with one or two items then a couple of people scrambling around and coming up with the same amount or less. We have 90 athletes on the XC team and you could imagine what we would haul in if only half of the parents helped out.

Amanda in NW Runner Sort of--

In this months edition of NW Runner there is a photo at the starting line of the Border Clash, and in this photo, if you look really close, you can see part of Amanda's head. I would like to take this time to congratulate part of Amanda's head for making it into NW Runner. I just hope the other part of her head doesn't get jealous.

Information coming soon on the Booster Club Auction.

Have Fun and Make $$$ for XC Team

The Capital City Marathon Training Group begins Jan. 19. WE are scheduled to help at the water stops on Jan. 26, Feb. 2 and March 1st. This will involve showing up at South Sound Running at 7:30. We should be finished before 10:30. Yes, I will sign service credit forms for this activity. We will be earning $1000.00 from the Marathon Association - half of it will be for water stops and another half will be earned by working on race day, May 18. We will also be on call to cover for any schools not showing up. Each failure to show up is $125.00 for us. Please e mail me so that I can register you for one or more days. Thanks.

Eleven athletes showed up for winter conditioning today.

Happy New Year!

It's New Years Resolution time. Before you do that though, reflect on the past year. How many of your goals did you achieve? Most likely not as many as you would have hoped. First of all take some time to dwell upon your successes. If you didn't have too many successes perhaps you need to divide your goals into smaller increments. For instance, if you want to run an 11:00 minute 3200 start with a goal of 12:30. Then set up a goal of 12:15, then 12:00 etc. Workout goals should be set the same way.
A few years ago, I had an athlete who ran a 4:57 mile as a Sophomore and set a goal to run a 4:20 mile as a Junior. He was very upset the first meet when he only ran a 4:40 mile. He stomped off swearing when he heard his time. Wait a minute though, hadn't he just performed a personal record by 18 seconds? Had he started with some intermediate goals he would have had a splendid day. Eventually, his Senior year he ran a 4:25, so I guess he was a loser? The reality is this:
We shoot for the stars, and if we don't make it, we might just hit the Moon, which isn't too bad. And if we hit the stars, then we set even higher goals. The nature of our sport is a lot of failure mixed with success. Show me someone who never fails and I'll show you someone who is not trying hard enough and is not dreaming big enough.
So, as this new year begins, set some goals and make them big, but also set some intermediate goals. The shame is not being able to reach our goals. The real shame is not setting goals in the first place.

Winter training on Mondays and Thursdays at 3:00, in the fitness portable.
